Chieko & Naoki

Omiyamairi (praying at the shrine) is a traditional event for a newborn in Chieko’s hometown in Japan. Parents and grandparents go to the shrine on the 30th day after the baby’s birth to pray for a healthy and happy life. If the baby is a boy, we draw the letter in Japanese meaning big on the center of his forehead. If a girl, we draw a letter meaning small. A newborn wears special gown or kimono for this event. The mother wore a kimono in the past. This traditional event may be different depending on where one lives.
